Ethyol (Amifostine)

Ethyol is MedImmune's chemoprotective agent used to reduce toxicities associated with radio/chemotherapy in ovarian, non-small cell lung, and head and neck cancer patients.

MedImmune continues to pursue additional research for Ethyol and is conducting studies to further expand its use for various indications. In 2001, the company intends to focus its efforts for Ethyol on studying improved methods of administration, as well as studying the ability of Ethyol to reduce certain toxicities in patients receiving chemotherapy in combination with radiation therapy. In 2001, Phase 2 clinical testing began to evaluate the efficacy of Ethyol as a subcutaneous dose in reducing mucositis and xerostomia associated with chemotherapy and radiation in patients with head and neck cancer and non-small cell lung cancer.
